Faster, Governed Vulnerability Fixes with a Tailored AI Assistant
A leading Aussie enterprise faced a growing backlog of code security vulnerabilities following a security tooling migration and a limited ability to determine which issues required immediate attention.
Skillfield introduced an exploit-based vulnerability prioritisation framework and configured a tailored AI remediation assistant, with governance and leadership reporting in support.
The result was a faster, more structured remediation process that helped developers address existing vulnerabilities while reducing the risk of new ones entering production.
The Problem
Following a migration to a new application security scanning platform, the organisation faced a significant backlog of vulnerabilities across hundreds of code repositories, spanning both internally developed applications and third-party libraries.
The volume of findings made it difficult to distinguish genuinely exploitable risks from lower-priority issues, including vulnerabilities affecting customer-facing applications.
The security team needed a practical way to prioritise remediation based on real-world risk, accelerate fixes across development teams and establish an ongoing process capable of keeping pace with newly discovered vulnerabilities as software development continued.
The Solution
Skillfield introduced an exploit-based scoring framework to prioritise third-party vulnerabilities based on their likelihood of real-world exploitation, rather than on raw volume, allowing teams to address the highest-risk issues first and progressively widen remediation efforts.
For vulnerabilities within internally developed code, Skillfield configured GitHub Copilot as a remediation assistant. As an out-of-the-box tool alone, the solution would not have delivered the required results. Skillfield customised Copilot with custom prompts, security guidance and reusable skill files, including alignment to the OWASP Top 10, to generate more accurate, context-aware remediation and automated checks for potentially vulnerable third-party libraries during code reviews.
Importantly, the technology was supported by strong governance. Skillfield developed leadership reporting that translated technical findings into business-relevant risk and worked directly with developers to embed the new approach into everyday delivery.
The Outcome
The organisation has significantly accelerated vulnerability remediation, with developers now working from prioritised, business-relevant findings rather than an undifferentiated backlog.
Within the first half of the year, the team had already remediated more vulnerabilities than during the entire previous year, demonstrating a substantial increase in remediation output.
Third-party vulnerabilities are now addressed according to real-world exploit risk, while automated code-review checks help identify potentially vulnerable libraries before they reach production.
The new governance framework has also improved visibility for senior leadership, providing clearer insight into security risks across the organisation’s highest-priority repositories. Together, these improvements have established a more proactive, sustainable approach to application security.
